MATCH PREVIEW: MAN UNTD VS MAN CITY

Manchester City
manager Manuel
Pellegrini is remaining
defiant over the
reigning Premier
League champions'
poor form ahead of Sunday's derby against
Manchester United.
Pellegrini's men slumped to a third
consecutive away league defeat - and fourth
in all competitions in a row on the road - at
Selhurst Park on Monday, as they lost 2-1 to
Crystal Palace to leave their title defence in
tatters.

REASONS I LEFT CAMP

The captain of the U20 side has come
under criticism for his decision to leave the
camp of the U23 squad without disclosing
to officials but could there be more to it?

The decision of Musa Muhammed to leave
the camp of the Nigeria U23s in Abuja
without informing officials is an issue that
has come under intense scrutiny in the last
two days.

It was reported on Wednesday that the 18-
years-old player had left camp to travel to
Europe in order to sign a contract with a yet
to be known club.
While the Nigeria Football Federation has
said it would punish the Flying Eagles
captain and everyone involved in his
decision to leave camp, could there be more
to it than meets the eye?
Professor Patrick Omo-Osagie, a sports
management professional, teacher and Goal
Nigeria columnist delved into the issue to try
and explain the likely reasons for
Muhammed's action.

real madrid casillas is getting suspicious

Martin Odegaard has
endured a tough start
to life at Real Madrid
and we understands
that members of the club's Castilla squad
were unhappy with the level of publicity
generated by his arrival in the Spanish
capital.
The 16-year-old is widely regarded as one of
the game's most exciting young talents,
with the European champions' decision to
sign the much-coveted attacking
midfielder from Stromsgodset for €3 million
in January making headlines across Europe.
That fanfare was greeted with a mixed
reception by Los Blancos' second team, who
have received nothing like the same level of
attention as they bid to force their way into
the Santiago Bernabeu side's senior squad.
Odegaard is already a full Norway
international but is yet to make a first-team
appearance for his new club and has even
struggled for regular appearances in their
reserves, with the youngster managing just
one goal in five outings thus far.
While international duty forced Odegaard to
miss one recent game, coach Zinedine
Zidane opted to leave him out of their
following fixture for tactical reasons. Castilla
had lost their previous four games with the
teenager in the starting XI but won both
games without him.
That said, Odegaard is doing his best to
adapt to life on and off the pitch by having
four Spanish lessons a week as he bids to
improve his communication with his new
team-mates.
Furthemore, the club remain unconcerned
over his development, given his tender years
and the fact that this is his first move away
from his homeland.
Carlo Ancelotti and his staff also recognise
the added difficulty that he has faced in
training with both the first team and Castilla
squad - he works with Zidane and his team
just once a week.
A Madrid source also dismissed any notion
of regret at Odegaard's arrival, adding that
he is clearly "a very talented player" and he
also appears likely to start against Tudelano
on Sunday.

winners and losers in afcon

For a time, Caf appeared to be progressive.
The confederation employed a qualifying
system which required the continent's
minnows to qualify among themselves just
for the right to compete against Africa's big
boys in the group stage.
It's an approach that has its merits.
Indeed, every time the likes of Spain,
England or Germany crush sides such
as Gibraltar, San Marino or Andorra in Uefa
qualifying, a section of the media, of fans,
always argues for preliminary qualifiers for
the continent's lesser sides. Admittedly, my
beloved Three Lions don't do too much
'crushing' all that often...but you get the
point.
Africa appeared to have got this right. The
likes of Mauritius and the Sao Tome e
Principe had already fallen before the group
stage of the 2015 Nations Cup qualifiers,
meaning the group stages were much more
competitive.
Almost every group had a handful of high-
profile clashes and exciting encounters and,
with two teams progressing from each, the
big dogs could generally get away with a
slip up or two.
On one hand, while there is, in principle, less
margin for error in groups where only the
top teams qualify (and the best two
runners-up), the presence of so many
minnows means that Africa's strongest
sides ought to have little trouble in
advancing.
Unless, of course, they have one other
strong team in their group.
During qualification for the last Afcon, for
example, the difficulty of the groups ought
to have been measured on the quality
between the second and third-best teams in
the pool. Now, though, with only the top
teams guaranteed a spot in the tournament
proper, it is the margin between the two
best teams which is the critical factor.
Losers: Sierra Leone & Sudan – The
Damned Nations
Without a doubt, the two big losers (and I
mean big losers) of the Afcon qualifying
draw are Sudan and Sierra Leone, who may
as well almost write this tournament off
before it's begun.
First of all, the two drawn in the best group
(in terms of overall quality of the four teams
based on Fifa rankings). The worst team in
the group, Sudan, are 31st in the current
rankings (admittedly a flawed measure), had
they been in Group K, Senegal's group, they
would have been the second-best team.
With margins so fine, that surely is
something Caf has to look at.
Secondly, the two have been mighty
unfortunate in not only being drawn with
holders Cote d'Ivoire, but also with new
hosts Gabon (a story for a rainy day).
Caf, copying Uefa's new method, insist that
hosts compete in the qualifying programme
but that there results are not counted
towards the final standing. In Group I, even
the team finishing in second-place will not
advance to the tournament.
These two were essentially eliminated when
the draw was made—a great shame
considering their status as two of the
continent's improving, promising nations.
Winners: Senegal and Algeria – An Easy
Ride
The Lions of Teranga, by contrast, find
themselves in Group K. As mentioned above,
it is very much the Group of Life...for them, at
least.
Having struggled to qualify for recent
tournaments after finding themselves
drawn in tough groups, the West Africans
may consider this to be karma.
In their group there is the joint-biggest gap
in classement between the best team in the
group (Senegal, fifth in the rankings) and
the second-best (Namibia down in 33rd).
That's a distance of 27 places.
It's a similar story for Algeria, who remain
the best-ranked team in the Fifa rankings.
They may consider the greatest threat in the
group to the Ethiopia—ranked 28th in the
continent. The Walias are a tricky side with a
smattering of skill, but having taken only
four points from their Afcon '15 qualifying
group—losing home and away in the
process—I would be stunned if they proved
to be genuine challengers to Les Fennecs.
Losers: Nigeria, Egypt, Cameroon and
South Africa
These four giants may have 15 African
crowns between them (as much as the rest
of the continent's sides put together) but it
appears very unlikely that all four will be
present at the 2017 showpiece.
Nigeria and Egypt have been drawn
together in Group G, while Cameroon and
South Africa find themselves pooled
together in Group M.
The situation is perhaps slightly more
comforting for the Indomitable Lions and
Bafana Bafana, as their group Is padded out
by Mauritania (36 in Africa) and the Gambia
(45 in Africa)—both heavyweights will be
confident of picking up maximum points
against these two, which should put them
right in the running for the best second-
placed team should they fail to top the
group.
Tanzania and Chad, the two teams that
populate Nigeria/Egypt's group may not be
markedly weaker than Mauritania/the
Gambia (although they are lower in the
rankings), but considering the recent
failings of the two giants, the chances of
them picking up maximum points against
the smaller teams is much lower.
It's hard to envisage either of the two big
dogs in that group accruing enough points
against the smaller teams to amass enough
points to qualify in second. Only first may do
for the Super Eagles and the Pharaohs.

what a s**t country

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has
been hit with a four-
game ban for his anti-
France tirade following
Paris Saint-Germain's
Ligue 1 loss at Bordeaux
last month.
The Sweden international was caught on
camera verbally abusing referee Lionel
Jaffredo after the 3-2 defeat and caused
huge controversy by labelling France "a s**t
country" that was not worthy of his talent.
Indeed, Ibrahimovic was roundly criticised
for his outburst, with even his adopted
nation's Prime Minister weighing into the
argument.
The 33-year-old apologised for his
comments and argued that he would not
have signed a new contract with PSG if that
was the way he felt about France.
However, the LFP has nonetheless decided
to ban Ibrahimovic for four games, meaning
he will miss the Ligue 1 champions'
upcoming clashes with Nice, Lille, Metz and
Nantes.
The ruling is a major blow for PSG, given the
outspoken attacker had announced his
return to his very best form with a hat-trick
in Wednesday's Coupe de France rout of
Saint-Etienne.
The capital club are also just one point clear
of Lyon at the top of Ligue 1, with just seven
rounds of the season remaining, only three
of which Ibrahimovic will now be eligible
for.
Gallingly for Ibrahimovic, he will also have to
sit out PSG's Champions League quarter-
final, first-leg clash with Barcelona next
week through suspension, after being sent
off in their previous fixture against Chelsea
at Stamford Bridge.
However, the former Barcelona man will be
able to lead the PSG attack in Saturday's
Coupe de la Ligue final against Bastia.

he will be punished

The Nigeria Football
Federation has said it is
disappointed with the
action of Musa
Muhammed, captain of
the U20 team, who
went skipped the U23 team camp during
the week.

Muhammed led the Flying Eagles to win the
African Youth Championship in Senegal last
month where he scored four goals to emerge top scorer.
He was also captain of the Golden Eaglets
that won the Fifa U17 World Cup in 2013.
Muhammed, along with four other players
from the Flying Eagles, had been invited to
try out with the Dream Team by coach
Samson Siasia, ahead of this weekend's
must-win All Africa Games final qualifying
match against Zambia in Lusaka.
However, Goal reported on Wednesday that
the right back, egged on by his agent, had
left camp without informing any of the
officials in order to sign a contract in
Europe.
Siasia eventually included two players from
the Flying Eagles – Taiwo Awoniyi and
Bernard Bulbwa – in his final squad to
Zambia on Wednesday with Muhammed
who had been a favourite overlooked.
Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF's general
secretary, said that the player's action was
unbecoming of a rising star.
"It will be an understatement for me to say
the Nigeria Football Federation is
disappointed by the behavior of Musa
Muhammed. This is someone who should be
a role model for the Nigerian youth," Sanusi
was quoted on the organisation's website.
"He is very good at what he does and we
love him for that. But discipline is essential
in any vocation and the NFF will no longer
condone indiscipline on the part of any
player or coach of any of the national
teams."
Sanusi was unequivocal that Muhammed
and anyone found to have aided his
unwholesome conduct would face severe
sanctions.
"The player had been drafted to the U-23
team because the coach believes he has
something to contribute to bring glory to
the nation. Whoever is found to be culpable
in this shameful act will be punished."

England vs. Norway: The 18-second football match

The final seconds of England's Under-19 women'smatch against Norway will be replayed in Belfast on Thursday after a refereeing error. England had been trailing the original game on Saturday 2-1 six minutes into injury time when they were awarded a penalty. The spot kick was converted by Leah Williamsonbut was deemed illegal by German referee Marija Kurtes for an England player encroaching in the box before the kick was taken. Kurtes incorrectly awared a free-kick rather than for the penalty to be retaken, and the final whistle blew 18 seconds later. But in a bizarre twist, governing body UEFA has ordered the match to be resumed in the 96th minute with England's penalty kick at 2145 BST in Northern Ireland following an appeal by the Football Association. As pressure penalties go, few come greater for Williamson, although the rules also state one of her teammates can replace her as the penalty taker if the England management so decide. The rules also state that exactly the same players playing in the original game, a European Under-19 Championship qualifier, must again be on the pitch for the dying seconds. The replay, though, will be under the watchful eye of another referee after Kurtes was sent home for her error. Explaining the ruling, UEFA said on its website: "We originally wrote that Norway had qualified but on 8 April the Uefa control, ethics and disciplinary body announced that Norway's game against England on 4 April will be replayed from the minute a penalty kick was awarded to England, who were 2-1 down at the time." Bizarrely, both England and Norway have other qualifying games to play on Thursday: England taking on Switzerland and Norway taking on Northern Ireland with both games kicking off at 1600 BST. Should England level it would be a remarkable, if bizarre, comeback. They have been 2-0 down following goals by Vilde Fjelldal and Molly Bartrip before Rosella Ayane got a goal back with two minutes of regulation time remaining The group winners all qualify for the championships in Israel in July along with the hosts, with the remaining spot going to the best group runners-up. ronaldo scores more more and lots more

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were both on target as both Barcelona and Real Madrid kept up the ferocious pace at the top of La Liga with comfortable wins Wednesday. Messi scored the opener, his 33rd in La Liga this season, as leader Barcelona beat Almeria 4-0 in the Nou Camp. Ronaldo was unable to match his five-goal heroics of the weekend, but his diving headed goal in the 67th minute broke the deadlock in 2-0 victory at Rayo Vallecano to keep Real within four points of Barca at the top. It was the Portuguese international's 300th goal for Real in 288 matches and puts him just 23 goals behind the club's record goal scorer Raul, who took 741 matches to reach a tally of 323 goals. After the 9-1 drubbing of Granada, Real was made to work much harder against an in-form team and the pressure was greater as Barcelona had secured its three points earlier in the evening. Read: Ronaldo five in Real goal glut Several chances were wasted and Ronaldo was harshly booked for diving shortly before he connected with a Dani Carvajal cross to score his 37th La Liga goal of the campaign. Ronaldo then set up Colombia star James Rodriquez for the clinching second, a low drive. Earlier, Messi curled home the opener after just over half an hour, with the other scores coming from Luis Suarez with a double with defender Marc Bartra also on target after the break. Luis Enrique rested Neymar and Gerard Pique ahead of the tough trip to Sevilla Saturday, but the changes did not affect a fine team performance. It was Barca's 20th win in the last 21 games in all competitions. Cup glory In the English FA Cup, Suarez's old side Liverpool rebounded from recent disappointments by winning its quarterfinal replay at Blackburn 1-0. Philippe Coutinho scored the winner in the 70th minute after an interchange of passes with Jordan Henderson to book his side's passage to the last four at Wembley where Aston Villa awaits. Liverpool is seeking its eighth triumph in the oldest cup competition in world football. Arsenal plays second-flight Reading in the other semifinal. The Italian Cup final will be contested by Juventus and Lazio after the capital side beat Napoli 1-0 in the second leg of the semifinal Wednesday. With the first leg tied 1-1, a goal from Senad Lulic in the 79th minute settled the tie in Lazio's favor as he connected with an Anderson cross. Bayern Munich had its work cut out to reach the last four in its defense of the German Cup, held 0-0 by Bayer Leverkusen after extra time. Pep Guardiola's team won the penalty shootout 5-3 to progress, with Thiago Alcantara scoring the winning spot kick after Manuel Neuer had made a fine save on the first Bayer penalty. A Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat-trick led Paris Saint-Germain to the French Cup final after a 4-1 semifinal win over Saint-Etienne at the Parc des Princes. PSG is still alive in four competitions, including the Champions League, where if faces Barcelona in the last eight.

Barcelona win, Lionel Messi scores. Real Madrid win, Cristiano Ronaldo scores. Life continues as normal in La Liga, Spain's premier football division, where the title race is entering the home straight. But the championship is still Barcelona's to lose -- four points clear of their great rivals with just eight games left. Barcelona waltzed to a routine 4-0 home win over Almeria on Wednesday, with Messi curling in a magnificent left-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area to open the scoring. Real Madridhad a stiffer test in their local derby against Rayo Vallecano before second-half goals from Ronaldo and James Rodriguez secured the points. It was the Portuguese international's 300th goal for Real in 288 matchesand put him just 23 goals behind the club's record goalscorer Raul, who took 741 matches to reach a tally of 323 goals. However, Real picked up five yellow cards, making Ronaldo, Rodriguez and Toni Kroos ineligible for their next league fixture. Ronaldo was booked for a dive in the penalty area when he appeared to slip as he was being tackled. He protested with the customary melo drama, and he had a point. At least Los Blancos' next league game is at home to little Eibar. Ronaldo v Messi: Brand Value 01:40 If Madrid harbor any hopes of overhauling their great rivals, it's because they have a marginally easier run-in. Both they and Barca play against Valencia at home and Sevilla away, two sides still chasing that lucrative final berth in next year's European Champions League. But Barcelona also have to visit third-place Atletico Madrid in their penultimate game of the season. If by then Real have closed the gap, it will be a nerve-wracking affair for Barca fans. Their side has a superior goal difference but that will count for nothing if Barcelona and Real are level on points after the final round of matches on May 24th -- because the title will be decided on their head-to-head record, which favors Real. The top two also have to balance domestic requirements with the quarterfinals of the Champions League, and that's where Real will come up against their cross-town rivals Atletico in a repeat of last year's final. It will be a feisty affair, while Barcelona arguably have a more tactical battle against Paris Saint-Germain. For the top teams in Europe, the games come thick and fast at this stage of the season: injuries, suspensions and tactical rotations will all influence the outcome. Besides the race for La Liga, there is also the undeclared contest between Ronaldo and Messi to finish as La Liga's top scorer. Messi has 33 goals. Ronaldo has scored 37, helped by no fewer than five goals against a depleted and relegation-threatened Granada last weekend. Carlos Bacca of Sevilla is a distant third on 17. The quality of both Ronaldo and Messi is indisputable but some might argue it's easier for them to find the net in Spain than if they were playing in England, Germany or Italy. The statistics suggest it might be. Nothing can be taken for granted in the faster and more physical English Premier League.

we will appeal

Real Madrid have confirmed they will appeal the yellow card shown to Cristiano Ronaldoin the 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday. The 30-year-old was booked for simulation after going to ground in the penalty area following a tackle by Antonio Amaya, a decision which prompted protests from him and his team-mates. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti also hit out at what he said was an "unbelievable" decision by the referee, which resulted in Ronaldo's fifth yellow of the season, ruling him out of the clash with Eibar on Saturday. However, the club remain hopeful of overturning the caution after releasing a statement on Thursday: "Real Madrid will present an argument against the yellow card shown to Cristiano Ronaldo in yesterday's match against Rayo Vallecano." It wasn't all bad news for the Portugal captain, though, as he scored the opening goal of the game to bring up his 300th strike in all competitions for the club, making him their third-highest goalscorer of all-time. James Rodriguez later added a second as Madrid ensured the gap between themselves and leaders Barcelona remains just four points.
